The moment the police officer asked Caleb to come with them, the entire gym fell silent.
The music stopped.
Even the teachers looked confused.
For a second, nobody moved.
I stared at Caleb, waiting for him to laugh and explain that this was some kind of misunderstanding.
Instead, his face turned completely white.
The officer looked at me.
“You really don’t know?” he asked.
My stomach dropped.
“Know what?”
Caleb opened his mouth.
“Officer, please—”
But the officer interrupted him.
“Ma’am, this young man has been under investigation for thelast three months.”
The room exploded with whispers.
Three months?
Investigation?
My knees felt weak.
One of the girls who had been mocking me moments earlier covered her mouth dramatically.
A teacher hurried toward us.
“What is going on?”
The officer glanced at Caleb before answering.
“We’ve received multiple reports regarding a series of anonymous donations made throughout the county.”
Nobody understood.
Not even me.
The officer continued.
“Someone has been secretly paying medical bills, utility bills, and school lunch debts for dozens of families.”
The gym became quiet again. Now everyone looked confused.
Including Caleb.
The officer sighed.
“The problem is that we couldn’t identify who was making the donations. Every payment came through different channels.”
I blinked.
“What does that have to do with Caleb?”
The officer looked almost embarrassed.
“Because we finally figured out it was him.”
The entire room froze.
“What?”
The officer nodded.
“For months we’ve been trying to identify the donor because some organizations believed the funds might be connected to fraud.”
The principal stepped forward.
“Fraud?”
“Turns out there wasn’t any fraud.”
Thefficer looked directly at Caleb.
“There was just a seventeen-year-old kid using every dollar he earned to help people.”
The gym fell completely silent.
I stared at Caleb.
He looked like he wanted
