We met at a charity dinner where I was serving champagne. He asked me my name. Then he looked at me and asked: “Have you been on your feet all night? Your feet must hurt.” It was such a simple question. But it had been years since a man had asked me if I was tired. Three months later, Richard proposed. My friends thought I had lost my mind. His children were even less kind. “Do you really think you’re going to keep this house?” his daughter Rebecca whispered to me after the wedding. “You aren’t going to get anything.” Richard heard her. He just smiled and said: “She will receive exactly what she deserves.” I pretended those words didn’t bother me. And for a while, I told myself I didn’t care what anyone thought. Because the truth was, I liked the comfort. I liked waking up without wondering if the electricity bill was paid. I liked buying groceries without checking my bank account first. I liked the warm house, the quiet mornings, and the feeling that, for once in my life, I wasn’t one bad week away from losing everything. But Richard was kind to me. Kinder than I had expected. He remembered how I took my coffee. He noticed when I was tired. He listened when I spoke, even when what I said didn’t matter. And at some point—awkwardly, almost embarrassingly—I stopped pretending I didn’t care. I truly loved him. Then Richard got sick. It all happened terrifyingly fast. Six weeks after the diagnosis, I was standing at his funeral. His children stood facing me as if I had personally snatched their father away from them. Rebecca barely looked at me. I cried anyway. Not for the house. Not for the money. But because the man who had made me feel safe for the first time in years was gone. After the funeral, Richard’s lawyer asked me to come to his office. When I arrived, Richard’s three children were already there. No one greeted me. On the lawyer’s desk sat a small wooden box. There was no will in sight. No thick stack of documents. Just the box. Rebecca leaned back in her chair with a faint smile. Then the lawyer looked at me. “Richard left very specific instructions.” No one spoke. He slowly slid the wooden box across the desk toward me. Then he said: “He made sure you received exactly what you deserved.” Rebecca let out a little laugh.
